When America Online users launch a webpage internally (through the AOL software), the
default settings decrease image quality. This compression method results in significantly
poor quality images and diminished color clarity.
The intent of the compression is to speedup page loading time by
making the images on the webpage smaller in size. This would be a n acceptable idea except
98% of all webpage graphics are already compressed (by the authors who distinguish the
settings) and recompression saves little space while greatly decreasing quality.
Fortunately, AOL has made it easy to change the image quality
settings. If you would like to view webpages the way they were meant to be viewed, we
recommend you follow these easy steps:
- In AOL 3.0 launch the browser and click the 'Prefs' button on the window toolbar.
In AOL 4.0 click the 'My AOL' button on the toolbar, and select the "Preferences'
button. Then select the 'WWW' option.
- Go to the "Web Graphics" tab.
Uncheck the "Use compressed graphics" box.
- Click OK.
If you decide you don't like this setting, simply return to the "Web Graphics"
tab and this time check the "Use compressed graphics" box.
